Diverse motivation as a didactic resource in the teaching of English as a second language (L2)

Abstract

In the instruction of a second language, motivation does actually play a fundamental role as an educational resource as to facilitate teaching for teachers and learning processes for students. Without motivation, the language learning process will be undermined and therefore doomed to non-existence. Can diverse motivation enhance language learning? This study aims to justify the variables involved in motivation in the English classroom. By means of field research using a descriptive design, the quantitative method was employed by means of a questionnaire based on Likert scale conducted among 88 students at different secondary schools, aged 14-18. Data was analyzed using the PLS statistical program (Partial Least Square). As the variables used were intangible, only sounds and structures are involved in language learning, but also a cultural/social background which are main parts of that process. Finally, results showed that diverse motivation is essential to learn a second language.
